See this Arduino-based ArduSpider robot toy!

by Mark R - on January 14, 2011
I believe that what you are seeing here is a product of something that Jose Julio’s daughter said to him: “Dad, can you build a robot for me?”
Man, if my daughter asked me that, I would try to deliver as much as I could. Still, I could never make a product of this quality. Granted, the ArduSpider has a certain DIY quality, but mine would probably be made of Lego and would require an instruction booklet.
It would also have been poorly assembled, but this Arduino-based ArduSpider robot looks better than the Anti-Gravity WebRunner toy that we reported about a while ago. Check out the video after the jump.

11-year old comes up with own iPad stand

by Edwin - on December 10, 2010

There is just something precocious about 11-year olds and their imagination – at least we know one of them in the good ol’ USA is patriotic enough to observe that while many devices and other stuff are designed here, they are actually manufactured elsewhere. Of course, the economics of the situation might be a bit too heavy for him to understand at the moment, but at the very least, he is able to think out of the box by coming up with something that is made back in the US without losing any bit of functionality.
We’re talking about 11-year-old Dino Zaharakis, who intends to develop a stand that could place/remove a device without disconnecting its cable, hold a device with/without a skin in both portrait and landscape modes, have viewing angles that were optimized for video conferencing and manufactured back home, all the while being able to play nice with iPad, Kindle, nook, tablets, iPhone and other smartphones.

Here’s a DIY Star Trek door!

by Mark R - on December 7, 2010
From watching science fiction film and television, I think we all know that the future is every door a sliding door.
Just think about shows like Star Trek, Babylon 5, and even futuristic shows that don’t take place in space. Except for the newer Battlestar Galactica, I think we all know that we will soon have no need for doorknobs or hinges.
I have a video after the jump of this particular sliding door, which is essentially a DIY project from this YouTube subscriber. There are more detailed instructions of how to create your own Star Trek door here if you want to build one for yourself. Of course, it is going to take a little longer than a weekend for this one.

Here’s a DIY Laser-guided Slingshot

by Mark R - on November 25, 2010
The slingshot is one of those devices that hasn’t changed much since its invention however many years ago. Of course, leave it to DIY inventors to give something a technological upgrade to something that probably doesn’t need a technological upgrade.
As you can see from the picture, this DIY guy has created a slingshot with a laser sight. Its construction looks relatively simple, and it has a special handle to store his pistachio ammo.
Apparently, it does actually improve his accuracy, even though the laser sight is located on the side of the slingshot fork and not the center. I would have instinctively put it in the center, but I’m guessing there is a reason for that construction. You can see a video of how to construct one of these bad boys after the jump.

Lawnmower is world’s fastest, zips by at 96MPH

by Edwin - on October 1, 2010

You know that you are in for a torrid time when your lawnmower can go a whole lot faster than your motorbike. After all, Bobby Cleveland’s crazy idea of kitting out his lawnmower has become reality, where it will go about (on even ground, obviously) at a whopping 96MPH, making it the fastest lawnmower in the world, hands down. Talk about trying to get the chores done quickly! Hopefully at that kind of insane speeds, you won’t run into a stone while riding on it, or cut off several toes and mole heads in the process without realizing so. For those who would like to have one of these puppies at home, chances are you will need to have a lawn that is the same size as that of a football field just to get it up to speed.

Glove Box Battery Jumper

Glove Box Battery Jumper

by Edwin - on January 6, 2011
Having a dead battery in your car is not something everybody wants, but it does happen to the best of us from time to time. Well, in such an event, you can always rely on the Glove Box Battery Jumper to help you out of a particularly tight position, and even better is you won’t need to have a friend or stranger who is willing to “lend” their car’s battery for you to jump start it. This device will help juice up your car’s battery from the comfort and safety of the driver’s seat, and to make it a whole lot more convenient, it is tiny enough to store within the glove box. The 30-volt battery will plug into your vehicle’s 12-volt lighter outlet, and is capable of jump starting your car’s battery in just 10 minutes. Heck, it is good enough to provide a two-amp “trickle” charge, even in temperatures as low as -10ยบ F. Doing something as simple as reversing a switch will allow the device to recharge in 30 minutes from a running car. Each $34.95 purchase already comes fully charged, where it is good for up to five years of power.

Vivitek promises 2D to 3D quick conversion: Are we there yet?

Vivitek promises 2D to 3D quick conversion: Are we there yet?

by Mark R - on January 7, 2011
I was amazed at how many booths on the CES floor were devoted to 3D-related products. I remember seeing this being whispered about at CES two years ago, then spoken about constantly at CES 2010, now 3D is literally in your face at CES 2011.
Of course, the average consumer like me can’t really afford to purchase a 3D system. Due to my lack of personal experience in 3D, I have wondered if we are at the point where we can put in an ordinary 2D movie and see it in 3D.
According to Vivitek, we can. I stopped by their booth out of curiosity, and a smooth-talking spokesperson assured me that 2D to 3D is possible, and Vivitek is the first company to do it. He told me that if I wanted to watch Gunsmoke or I Love Lucy Reruns, then all I would have to do is put on the video file and my 3D glasses.

by Edwin - on January 7, 2011
Ever since the mass production of digital cameras, we have certainly seen an explosion in the number of digital images to hit the Internet, with billions more trapped on your local hard drive. Yup, you read that right – the Polaroid GL10 Instant Mobile Printer is an extremely small, mobile device that boasts an intuitive design and easy-to-use feature set which produces Polaroid Classic Border, full bleed and contemporary 3×4” photos in under a minute – basically a portable photo booth in a box.

Cordless Electrotherapy Pain Reliever

Cordless Electrotherapy Pain Reliever

by Edwin - on January 8, 2011
Are you sick and tired of taking in so much drugs into your body to soothe that pain, that you are looking for an alternative method in which it will not kill your kidneys or liver in the process? This is where the Cordless Electrotherapy Pain Reliever comes in, as this device will soothe sore muscles without having it tethered to a power outlet. Utilizing a similar technology that is employed by physical therapists, the battery powered device’s electrodes will emit low-voltage electrical pulses which stimulate muscles, help facilitate blood flow and oxygen to injuries, and reduce lactic acid, relieving muscle aches and pain. It isn’t too large to tote around either, being roughly the size of a wristwatch, allowing it to be attached anywhere on the body thanks to a reusable self-adhesive pad which can be worn under clothing while you work, or perhaps even during some light exercise sessions without hindering your movement. Boasting up to eight levels of intensity which can be easily adjusted thanks to the three-button control panel and LCD, this $69.95 purchase is powered by a CR2032 battery that offers up to 20 hours of juice.
